A practical response framework for when PPE may be unsafe, non-compliant, incorrectly described, or unsupported by reliable evidence. What Can Trigger Scrutiny

An injury, complaint, failed test, certification-body question, marketplace challenge, competitor report, distributor request, product change, missing document, authority inspection, or public product alert.

First Response

  1. Name the product, variants, batches, dates, and markets.
  2. Pause new claims, shipments, or sales if the evidence or risk justifies it.
  3. Preserve reports, certificates, photos, labels, web pages, complaints, and supplier communications.
  4. Identify the decision owner.
  5. Do not edit, replace, or backdate evidence.
  6. Create a factual incident log.

Triage Questions

  • Is there an actual or suspected safety risk?
  • Is this paperwork-only, or could protective performance be affected?
  • Can affected product be identified?
  • Is it one model, variant, batch, or the wider family?
  • Is it already on the market?
  • Has anyone been injured?
  • Has a test house, certification body, Trading Standards, HSE, OPSS, BSIF, or another body raised it?
  • Is notification required?

Containment Options

Depending on evidence and risk: hold stock, correct information, stop a claim, quarantine a batch, contact distributors, withdraw, recall, correct, re-test, re-certify, or retire the product. Choose the response based on evidence and risk, not only commercial convenience.

Authority Awareness

For workplace PPE in Great Britain, HSE is the product-safety market-surveillance authority. Local Trading Standards are relevant to consumer-product enforcement. OPSS publishes product safety alerts, reports, and recalls for products posing serious risk or requiring public action.
